About
The Skatepark: Concrete Dreams
The goal of The Skatepark-Concrete Dreams is to make a positive difference in peoples’ communities through the medium of action sports and the public spaces that facilitate them. The series shows a skatepark being created from conception to completion in three segments taking place over a decade. Using verite documentary footage, interviews, archival video, and photos of community meetings and fundraisers, we create an engaging storyline that shows how dreams can become reality even if the obstacles are many.
Episode one:
We are introduced to public skateparks as a topic and to our main character, Paulina Jimenez. After seeing the terrible condition and location of of the local skatepark, she begins the long journey of petitioning the community and organizing to get a new, state-of-the-art skatepark built in her new hometown. Over the next several years, she starts a non-profit and begins spreading the skatepark gospel; all while chasing grants and numerous donations. Her personal story identifies her dreams for her family and community along with her many struggles. With a humorous attitude and determination, and children in tow, she keeps pushing forward until her non-profit finally wins an Illinois State grant to finish the skatepark.
Episode two:
We are introduced to the Coulon’s, co-owners of Evergreen Skateparks; who win the bid to construct the Villa Park skatepark Paulina has worked so hard to be rewarded. Evergreen is a young, Portland, Oregon based company looking to prove themselves in the midwest. They agree to create the park with a modest budget on an intense timeline. Individual perspectives on the new skatepark from various builders, naysayers, and enthusiasts are all brought to light in this segment. Construction of the park proves to have its own set of challenges as the local concrete union pickets the skatepark contruction due to what they see as an illegitimate use of State funds.
Episode three:
With the skate park now completed, this segment explores how it has affected the community and its creators. Five years later we catch up with local residents, users, Evergreen Skateparks, & Paulina. This segment features the skaters who use the park and the people who made it happen.
